Indian Soups – Simple, Soothing, and Straight from the Kitchen

There’s a quiet joy in stirring a pot of homemade soup, especially the kind we grew up with—light, flavorful, and full of comfort. Indian soups, whether it’s a gently spiced dal shorba, a tangy rasam, or a humble vegetable broth, have always had a place in our homes. These are not just starters; they’re warm bowls of love, often made with whatever is fresh and available, guided by the wisdom of our mothers and grandmothers. Balanced with spices and herbs, many of these soups carry health benefits too—helping with digestion, soothing colds, or simply warming us up after a long day. Here, I’m sharing some of those familiar, soul-satisfying recipes from my kitchen to yours.

(249)Drumstick Soup

Ingredients

  • 2 Drumsticks
  • 8 Almonds
  • 2 Coconut cubes
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 1 tsp. Black pepper powder
  • ½ inch Ginger piece.
  • 8-10 Mint leaves (Phudina pan)
  • 3 cups water.

Method

  1. Cut Drumsticks into small pieces. In a pressure cooker gather all ingredients and add 1 cup water.
  2. Pressure cook up to 2 whistles.
  3. When pressure releases open the lid and add the remaining amount of water.
  4. Scrape all drumstick pieces with the help of a spoon and discard skins of it.
  5. Make a paste of soaked Almonds, coconut cubes, Ginger and Mint leaves.
  6. Blend the Drumstick contents with paste of remaining ingredients with the help of the hand blender. Strain the content with the help of the strainer.
  7. Put the content ( Drumstick soup) on high flame and give 2 – 3 boils. Turn off and serve hot with love and smile.

(248)Carrot soup

Ingredients

  • 5 Orange Carrots.
  • 1 small Onion.
  • ½ inch Ginger piece.
  • 8-10 Mint leaves (steam and then removes otherwise colour will change )
  • 3 cup water.
  • 1 tsp.salt.
  • Tempering Ingredients 1 tbsp. Ghee, 1 tsp. cumin seeds, 1 bay leaf, 8-10 Curry leaves, 2 cloves.
  • 1 tsp. Black pepper powder.

Method

  1. In a saucepan add 1 cup water , carrot pieces, onion pieces, ginger, mint leaves, salt and pepper powder and pressure cook up to 2 whistles.
  2. When pressure releases open the lid, blend it with a hand blender.
  3. Strain the content with the strainer and add remaining water.
  4. Heat the ghee in a tempering vessel. Add cumin seeds and wait for crackling sound after that add other tempering Ingredients and give a quick stir to all and pour it in soup.
  5. Boil carrot soup for 2-3 minutes after adding Black pepper powder and serve hot. Serve with love and smile.

(78) Vegetable stew

Ingredients

  • 4 cups water
  • ¼ cup green peas.
  • ¼ cup pea sized cut carrots.
  • ¼ cup pea sized cut onion.
  • ¼ cup small florets of cauliflower
  • 1 cup fine paste of tender coconut or 1 cup paste of Shrifal after removing brown colour skin.
  • 1 tbsp. coconut oil.
  • 2 cloves.
  • ½ inch cinnamon stick.
  • 4 coarsely grind black pepper.
  • 2 bay leaves.
  • 8-10 Curry leaves.
  • ½ inch finely diced or paste of ginger.
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tbsp. finely chopped coriander leaves.

Method

  1. Heat coconut oil in saucepan.
  2. Add all dry spices and saute for 1 minute.
  3. Add curry leaves and ginger paste .Mix it quickly.
  4. Add all vegetables .Saute for 2 minutes. Add salt and 3 cups water.
  5. Side by side boil 1 cup water and add coconut paste in it.
  6. Strain coconut paste water in saucepan .
  7. Boil for 5 minutes so vegetable stew is ready.
  8. Garnish with coriander leaves.
  9. Vegetable Stew is ready .
  10. Serve with love and smile.
Mix vegetables for stew.

Tender coconut cubes
Soak coconut cubes in boiled water.

(69) Celery Soup

Serves 4 (250 ml.each)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped fresh celery stems with leaves.
  • 3 medium size tomatoes.
  • 2 tsp. salt.
  • 1 tsp. Sugar.
  • 250 ml water for cooking.
  • 750 ml more water.
  • 1 tsp. black pepper powder.

Method

  1. In a saucepan , add Celery, tomatoes, salt, sugar and water. Keep this pot in pressure cooker .
  2. Cook upto 3 whistles and switch off the flame.
  3. After pressure releases open the cooker lid . Strain excess water which is a clear stock or broth, keep it aside and blend the contents in the blender.
  4. Strain the blend by continuously stirring and adding broth.
  5. Add extra water to it for making 1 liter soup.
  6. Give 2-3 boils to soup after adding black pepper powder.
  7. Celery soup is ready. Serves hot.
  8. Serve soup with handavo, khichadi, pulao, Kanki-ghes or as your desire. Serve with love and smile.
